Thinking about rope hand restraint escape techniques, is probably not something the average person does every day. If ever, to be honest. However, it is something that just might need some more consideration. Especially in the times we are living in. These days the media is full of kidnapping stories – almost daily in fact. Stories of holiday makers being taken for ransom while traveling exotic destinations, aid-and-relief workers being kidnapped in certain “hot-spot” areas of the world, journalists being being kidnapped in war-torn areas, and so the list goes on.

One of the first things kidnappers would do is to tie your hands together with rope or cord so that you cannot use your hands and arms to defend yourself. Next, they would possibly tie your ankles together – immobilizing you completely. After the initial shock has worn off, you find your yourself in a bind, so to speak – completely at the mercy of your kidnappers. Can you escape from these kind of situations? The answer is YES … you can. That is providing you know what do, and how to go about implementing rope hand restraint escape techniques.

Former CIA Agent Demonstrates Rope Restraint Escape Techniques

SurvivalTab found this very informative article about an ex-CIA agent which shows you two very effective rope hand restraint escape techniques. Here’s what the article has to say:

If you ever worry about the possibility of a kidnapping a former CIA agent has revealed techniques used to escape even the tightest of hand restraints.

Jason Hanson, who worked for the CIA for six years before starting his own security business, showed DailyMail.com two methods of escaping should you find yourself tied up.

The two tactics used include creating space to slip your hands out of a rope restraint or preparing yourself to cut yourself free.

Spotlight On Mass Shooting Survival

Mass shootings are the order of the day. Let’s not beat around the bush here. We live in uncertain times and you need to educate yourself, and your loved ones on the topic of mass shooting survival. Actually you also have a civil duty to spot educate and protect everyone around you in case of an actual mass shooting scenario.

The statistics are a worrying reality and you have every reason to be concerned as well as feel the need to take action. According to the Washington Post, 869 innocent people have been the victims of mass shootings since August 1, 1966:

when ex-Marine sniper Charles Whitman killed his wife and mother, then climbed a 27-story tower at the University of Texas and killed 14 more people before police shot him to death.

Source: Washington Post

It is alarming to note that the researched data does not include other shootings related to family murders, robberies and gang killings.

The question you now have to consider is: What would you do? Are you ready to protect yourself, and your loved ones in case of a mass shooting crisis?” The problem is, that you just have no way of knowing when and where the next attack will happen. So, you need to be mentally prepared – get into your survival mindset.

  • Leave your belongings behind
  • Run, if you can’t hide

SurvivalTab cannot agree more with tip number six. Never get involved in a shootout with the shooter, even if your are carrying a firearm and you know how to use it. Chances are that you’ll just further aggravate the situation and endanger more lives. It is better to run or hide and survive to live another day.

We would like to make a bold statement and say that ‘an egg is the best survival foodstuff’.

Here’s why we say so:

An egg is a highly nutritious foodstuff. It is loaded with most of the important nutrients that your body needs to survive. These nutrients include complete, and high quality proteins that are easily absorbed by your body.

The white of an egg contains over 40 different kinds of proteins and while the yolk contains proteins as well, it ALSO contains the necessary omega-3 fats, vitamins A, D and E.

To put this in a nutshell, or should we say “an EGG shell” … the egg is right up there with the best, if not THE best survival foodstuff when it comes to essential food sustenance.

We found this article for you and here’s what Survivopedia have to say about eggs …

One of the basic criteria for perfection in the prepping world is multipurpose utility. For foodstuff, the product also needs to keep well, be nutritious and be easy to acquire or stockpile.

Very few fresh items meet these criteria, but one most certainly does: the egg. Having a source of eggs for survival is just an example of good preparation if you can manage it. In addition to being extremely nutritious, eggs purportedly have more than 100 uses. We tend to think that’s a lowball estimate.

Does your survival pack have a “cluttered” feel to it? If so, you’re not the only one with those thoughts. Here at SurvivalTab we recently tackled the same issue and decided to go for a minimalist survival pack. All this came about after an email conversation with a follower. His exact words on the matter were …

I have recently started throwing stuff (survival gear) away. Really good stuff too. I feel like all the stuff is suffocating me. I just want to get rid of everything and go minimalist.

So, what does it mean to go minimalist in terms of your survival pack?

Simplify Your Survival Pack

It means that you should simplify your survival planning and go with only the bare essentials. We think that you should start with the basics of survival. With basics we mean your survival bag, bug out bag, survival pack, or whatever you want to call it.

You need to consider the most essential survival items for your pack. The items you will need to get you through the first 72 hours of any kind of crisis. Planning for such a minimalist survival pack might sound easy, but it’s not.

So, to help you and give you some ideas, we found this video for you.

Survival Lilly’s Minimalist Pack

Here’s a list of what Survival Lilly has in her pack …

  • 1 x Hatchet
  • 1 x Fixed Blade Knife
  • 1 x Wool Blanket Sleeping Bag
  • 1 x Military Canteen And Cup
  • 1 x Roll of Paracord
  • 1 x Military Poncho
  • 1 x Wool Cap
  • 1 x Altoids Survival Kit (Fishing Kit, Matches, Ammo for Slingshot, Canvas Needle, Extra Thread For Sleeping Bag, Button Compass)
  • 1 x Toothbrush Kit
  • 1 x Mosquito Net
  • 1 Set of Ear Plugs
  • 1 x Bow Drill Set With a Skateboard Wheel
  • 1 x First Aid Kit
  • 1 x Pack of Tissues
  • 1 x Sharpening Stone
  • 1 x Slingshot Rubberband
  • 1 x Paracord Wrist Bracelet

Minimalist Survival Pack – Additional Items

SurvivalTab thinks that it is a pretty decent setup, but would probably add the following items:

Food
1 x Eye Glasses Microfiber Cleaning Cloth
1 x Sun Glasses (if you don’t wear prescription glasses)
A More Comprehensive First Aid Kit
1 x Small Flashlight or Headlamp
1 x Small Multi-Tool
1 x All Terrain Gloves

Ultimately you need decide for yourself what you would need in your minimalist survival pack. Look at each item and ask yourself this question.

What purpose would this item serve in a time of need?

All things considered, it is a good thing to have such a minimalist pack at hand when you need one for a 72 hour survival period.

What does kayaking have to do with survival, you may ask? Well, history teaches us that, the kayak we use for adventure and recreational purposes today, was invented in the distant past and used as as a means of survival – hence our use of the term “survival kayaking”.

The Inuits (Eskimos) of the northern arctic regions have been using kayaks to hunt fish, seals, walrus and other land animals for thousands of years. The kayaks were very effective in terms of approaching the hunted prey with extreme stealth. The Inuits survival depended on the mentioned food sources and they relied heavily on their kayaks for successful hunts.

The modern-day kayak can still be an important means of survival out in the wilderness, providing you have the necessary skill to use it effectively in terms of survival hunting as well as a means of traveling on rivers or open ocean. The general problem is that a kayak is not something you can just pack in your bug-out/adventure bag and carry around on your back.

A Revolutionary Collapsible Kayak

You need a vehicle to transport a kayak and that could limit the usefulness of a kayak as a means of survival out in the wilderness. Well, until now that was … meet the Pakayak kayak that collapses into pieces that can be carried around like a suitcase, and be assembled in a matter of minutes.

Source: Instagram @pakayak

What exactly is Doug Mackro’s brainchild all about? We found out on Instagram and Outsideonline.com …

Just about every hard-sided kayak is made through a process called roto-molding, which sculpts a single piece of plastic into whatever shape a manufacturer chooses. That same process is used here to create the six segments that nest inside one another, Russian Matryoshka doll set-style.

When fully assembled, this Pakayak Blue Fin 14 measures 14 feet long—a sweet spot that makes it less unwieldy than a 16-foot beginner kayak, but more stable than shorter models.

Packed down, the Blue Fin is about three-and-half feet tall, two feet wide, and 16 inches deep. With the included case, you can carry it on your back or haul it around like roller luggage via the built-in wheels.

This invention is sure to take kayaking to a whole new level and suddenly there is now no reason why a kayak could not become part of your survival gear.

We know that the idea of survival bicycling does not immediately jump to mind when thinking about bicycling. Also, bicycling does not appeal to everybody and maybe a bicycle doesn’t quite fit into the monthly budget.

BUT, here’s why you should at least entertain the idea of owning a bicycle. Especially if you are not already an enthusiast … and … if you ARE an enthusiastic cyclist, then the list of reasons could give you some additional points to ponder on …

  • Bicycling As A Means Of Transport And Transport Alternative
  • Health Benefits Of Bicycling
  • Adventure And Sport Bicycling
  • Bicycling As A Life-Long Family Activity
  • Survival Bicycling

That being said, let’s take a closer look at the mentioned reasons …

Why You Should Consider Survival Bicycling

  1. Bicycling saves money in terms of car maintenance and gas, and it helps to avoid traffic jams. It also increases the mobility of anyone that does not own a car or motorbike, and it is certainly faster than walking.
  2. The health benefits of bicycling are numerous. Cardio fitness as well as muscle and joint health comes to mind when talking about the health benefits.
  3. Many people out there are avid adventure, or sport bicycling enthusiasts. Think about off-road adventure trails, adventure and camping trips, road bike races and other bicycle-specific events.
  4. Bicycling is a lifelong activity enjoyed by the young and the not-so-young alike. It is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family in any kind of setting.
  5. Survival bicycling is not something that immediately jumps to mind when one thinks about bicycling, but it something that needs to be seriously considered and here’s why …

Survival Bicycling Is A Reality

Before Hurricane Sandy took out power, subways, buses, and some roads this week, New Yorkers stocked up on food, water, duct tape, flashlights, and batteries. After the storm, they stocked up on bicycles. An overlooked survival tool, the bike has become the only realistic mode of transportation for thousands of residents of the nation’s densest and most populous city. That shouldn’t come as a surprise.

From post-Sandy New York to rush-hour in Jakarta, the bicycle steps up where infrastructure falls short. It’s narrow enough to squeeze through traffic, efficient and fast enough to cover lots of ground, and simple enough that just about anyone can operate and maintain one.

Further to this …

The common bicycle is fast, quiet, muscle-powered, and easy to maintain. Add to this the additional advantage that it is the only vehicle you can pick up and carry if the terrain gets rough. People using bicycles to escape from infested areas have almost always fared better than those on foot.

No truer words have been written about the common bicycle and is definitely a good motivation for putting survival bicycling on the “To Do” list.

SurvivalTab found this interesting video which is certainly worthwhile watching. The host, Nick and his father (a professional hunter), show us how to make a short bow using an umbrella (of all things). We are of the opinion that you can definitely call it a survival bow, since the only reason you’ll ever want to make such a bow is when you’re in a survival situation and you need to hunt for food or defend yourself against an attack or bodily harm.

Making A Survival Bow Is A Skill Worth Aquiring

Making a survival bow by using an umbrella, is a skill well worth acquiring. Simply because you never know when you might find yourself out in the wild, in the kind of situation where your have mouths to feed with no supplies at hand. Not only that, you could also be in a dangerous situation where you have defend yourself against attackers of any kind without a weapon to do so.

The kind of dangerous situation we are talking about could very well happen in your home or on your property, and not necessarily only out in the woods somewhere. We all know what dangers you could face during an out-of-control riot or a law and order meltdown.

Having said all that, let’s watch Nick and his father show us how it’s done …

Traditional Short Bow Hunting

After watching the video, we commented to ourselves that Nick’s survival bow doesn’t appear to be very strong and capable of inflicting much damage, but we decided that it must be seen in context of the circumstances that you’ll need it.

First of all, something is better than nothing and you’ll need to adapt your strategy to complement the tool/weapon at your disposal. The kind of strategy that the San people of Southern Africa (commonly known as the Bushmen) have been using for centuries. Namely, to use a short bow for close range hunting (also referred to as persistence hunting).

Source: Getty Images

Secondly, in terms of defending yourself, you’ll have to make peace with the fact that the only way you’ll neutralise your attacker is if the survival bow is used in close proximity to your attacker, regardless if it’s a man or a beast.

Why don’t you get hold of a tired-looking umbrella and give it a go! Your kids can always use it as a toy, but just make sure you give them blunt-tip plastic arrows to play around with.

It is always nice to hear or read about a survival story with a good ending, but this story has a little edge to it. It is about one man’s complete awareness and calm acceptance of his situation after he suddenly changed from an adventurer to a survivor in the Moroccan Desert. Rewind to 1993 and meet Emile Leray, the Frenchman who drove into the desert with a Citroen 2CV, and drove out of it on a “Mad Max” style survival motorcycle.

Emile Leray in the Moroccan Desert

Source: TheVintageNews

Exactly how did the French adventurer come to find himself in such a situation?

I wanted to do it off road because I had travelled round Africa about 10 times, so I knew the region well and therefore had no concerns.

I decided to do it in a 2CV because, although it is not a 4×4, it is tough. In Africa they call it the ‘Steel Camel’ because it goes everywhere — provided you drive it gently. One must not be rough.

I obviously was too rough because I broke it.

Yes, he broke it and found himself stranded in the desert about 20 miles away from the nearest civilization.

I could not have gone back on foot — it was too far. I put myself in what one calls survival mode. I ate less; I monitored my supplies of water and of food to make them last as long as possible.

Fortunately Emile planned well and he had enough supplies to last him several days. What happened next is the stuff of legends that has earned him the title of … “the most extreme mechanic in the world”. Emile slowly transformed his tough little Citroen 2CV into a survival motorcycle and drove out of the desert almost two weeks later.

Emile Leray’s Survival Motorcycle

Not all stories end with the hero riding off into the sunset – at least not in this case. This hero drove straight into the Moroccan Police … who promptly gave him a big fine because his survival motorcycle did not resemble the registration information of the car that he drove into the desert – go figure?
